Dr Ken Maclean

KEN MACLEAN is a clinical geneticist at Sydney IVF working on pre-implantation genetic diagnosis. He started his career in clinical genetics in 2001 when he was appointed Clinical Genetics Fellow at the Children’s Hospital, Westmead, and later at the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick. In 2003, he moved to the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and was recognised as the top-ranked candidate National Health & Medical Research Council Gustav Nossal Post-Graduate Scholar.

One of Ken’s professional goals is to increase awareness of genetic medicine and developmental biology, and he is involved in teaching under-graduates, post-graduates, paediatricians and genetics trainees. For more than six years he has actively contributed to training paediatricians and is an accredited examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP).

Ken is a Fellow of the RACP, as well as member of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia and Australasian Association of Clinical Geneticists. Ken was also a Member of the Cardiovascular Genetics Working Group and Australian & New Zealand Society for Cell & Developmental Biology. In his role as a clinical geneticist in the ACT and as a locum paediatrician in regional NSW, he has gained significant knowledge of issues related to delivery of medical services to regional areas.

Prior to working in clinical genetics, Ken began his career in medicine as a registered nurse. In 1992 he completed a Bachelor of Science (Medicine) and then went on to complete a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at The University of Sydney. After an internship at the Prince of Wales/Prince Henry Hospitals, Sydney, he trained as a paediatrician at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

Outside of his clinical commitments, Ken is kept busy raising a young family and, when time permits, he enjoys indoor climbing and is an avid bike rider.
